Legendary music composer Ilaiyaraaja has once again asserted his rights over the usage of his compositions in films. The Madras High Court, presided over by Justice N. Senthilkumar, granted a temporary injunction in favor of the composer in a case against Mythri Movie Makers, producers of the film Good Bad Ugly (GBU).
The legal action pertains to the unauthorized use of three of Ilaiyaraaja’s iconic songs: “Otha Rubayum Tharen” from Nattupura Pattu, “Ilamai Idho Ido” from Sakalakala Vallavan, and “En Jodi Manja Kuruvi” from Vikram. According to the court order, the producers are restrained from exhibiting, screening, selling, distributing, publishing, or broadcasting the film along with these compositions.
Ilaiyaraaja contended that the makers of GBU neither sought his consent nor paid the royalties to which he is legally entitled, constituting a clear infringement of his copyright and moral rights under Sections 19(9) and 19(10) of the Copyright Act.
The injunction serves as a reminder of the importance of obtaining proper permissions and honoring copyright obligations when using creative works, especially those of legendary artists. The producers are now required to halt online streaming of the film immediately until the matter is resolved.
