The United States continues to remain the preferred global destination for international students, driven by its world-class education system and strong employment pathways. India has retained its position as the largest source of foreign students in the U.S. for the second consecutive year, supported by impressive growth across key academic segments.
In the latest academic cycle, the U.S. recorded 363,019 Indian students, accounting for 30.8% of all international enrolments. This firmly places India ahead of all other countries sending students abroad. An additional count by U.S. authorities shows an even higher figure, noting 422,335 active Indian students, underscoring the significant scale of India’s student presence.
The surge is primarily driven by rising interest in technology, engineering, business, and research-focused programs. Undergraduate enrolments have seen notable growth, and a substantial number of Indian students are choosing to continue their stay through the Optional Practical Training (OPT) program, leveraging the strong career opportunities it offers.
However, the overall picture is not without challenges. Graduate enrolments have dipped from 196,567 to 177,892, a decline attributed to stricter visa scrutiny and slower processing timelines. Non-degree and short-term programs have also experienced marginal reductions.
Despite these hurdles, India maintaining the top spot for the second year reflects the enduring trust of Indian families in U.S. higher education and the sustained demand for high-quality global academic and career opportunities.
