As global immigration policies tighten, India has taken a significant step toward regulating its own immigration system. The Immigration and Foreigners Bill, 2025 was passed in the Lok Sabha today, following its introduction by Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The bill aims to streamline immigration policies, ensuring stricter visa regulations and categorization of foreign nationals.
A key feature of this bill is the establishment of a Bureau of Immigration, which will oversee visa issuance, entry protocols, and foreign national monitoring. Moving forward, all foreigners entering India will be classified into six categories: tourists, students, skilled workers, business visitors, refugees, and illegal immigrants.
Under the new law, individuals entering India without valid documentation will face severe consequences. Illegal entry into the country will attract a fine of up to ₹5 lakh and up to 5 years of imprisonment. Additionally, possession of fake visas or passports will result in a fine of ₹10 lakh and up to 7 years in prison.
While the bill has been passed in the Lok Sabha, it is now set for review in the Rajya Sabha. Following its approval, it will require presidential assent before becoming law. The exact timeline for its implementation remains uncertain, pending legal and procedural clearances.
This legislation marks a crucial shift in India’s immigration policy, aligning it with global trends of stricter border controls and enhanced security measures.
