India Slips to 81st Rank in Henley Passport Index 2025, Retains Access to 58 Visa-Free Destinations
India’s position on the global mobility scale has experienced a minor setback in 2025, with the Indian passport slipping one spot to rank 81st in the latest Henley Passport Index, down from 80th in 2024. Despite this drop, Indian passport holders continue to enjoy visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 58 countries, offering a diverse mix of travel opportunities across continents.
While key travel destinations such as the United States, United Kingdom, and most European Union countries still require Indian citizens to obtain a visa, a substantial number of countries in Asia, Africa, the Caribbean, and Oceania remain accessible without prior visa arrangements. These destinations range from popular holiday spots to hidden gems, catering to a wide array of travel interests—from beach getaways to cultural exploration and adventure tourism.
Frequently visited destinations like Indonesia, Thailand, Maldives, Kenya, and Mauritius remain favourites due to their proximity and tourism infrastructure. Meanwhile, countries such as Fiji, Laos, Madagascar, and Zimbabwe offer offbeat experiences rich in biodiversity and local heritage.
In the regional context, neighbouring countries including Bhutan, Nepal, and Sri Lanka continue to offer seamless travel options for Indian citizens. Additionally, Qatar, Iran, Kazakhstan, and Jordan expand access to West and Central Asia through visa-free or visa-on-arrival provisions.
