An Indian-origin man, Phani C. Talluru (52), has been sentenced to 20 years in prison in a disturbing child exploitation case that shocked the community in Ashburn.

The court handed down a 25-year sentence, with five years suspended, effectively requiring him to serve two decades behind bars. He was convicted on multiple serious charges, including aggravated sexual battery and the use of digital platforms to exploit minors.

During sentencing, Talluru attempted to defend his actions by citing alcoholism, health issues, childhood trauma, and depression following his mother’s death. He claimed to have reformed and stated that he had been sober for over two years. However, the court firmly rejected these arguments.

The judge noted that the offences were not isolated incidents but part of a prolonged pattern of abuse that caused severe harm to the victims. Highlighting the seriousness of the crimes and a perceived lack of genuine remorse, the court imposed a sentence significantly above standard guidelines.

According to prosecutors, Talluru used social media platforms like Snapchat and WhatsApp to send explicit messages and videos to minors. One teenage victim reported receiving inappropriate content and repeated requests for explicit images. Authorities also revealed that he attempted to cover up his actions by urging victims to delete evidence and remain silent.

Describing the acts as “outrageous” and a “betrayal of trust,” the judge emphasized that the accused was fully aware of his actions.

Following his release, Talluru will be placed under strict supervision for five years and will be required to register as a sex offender for life.
