A social media post has gone viral after an Indian student was reportedly handcuffed and deported from Newark Airport in the United States, raising concerns over the treatment of international students at U.S. ports of entry.
Entrepreneur Kunal Jain shared photos and videos on his X (formerly Twitter) account, showing the student restrained and pinned to the ground. Jain described the incident as deeply distressing, comparing the student’s treatment to that of a criminal.
“I witnessed a young Indian student being deported from Newark Airport last night—handcuffed, crying, and treated like a criminal. He came chasing dreams, not causing harm. As an NRI, I felt helpless and heartbroken. This is a human tragedy,” Jain wrote.
Jain added that the student was scheduled to board the same flight as him but never made it on board. He expressed concern that the student’s parents were likely unaware of what was happening to their son.
“This poor kid’s parents likely have no idea what’s happening to him. @IndianEmbassyUS @DrSJaishankar — he was supposed to fly out last night but never boarded. Someone must follow up with New Jersey authorities. He looked disoriented when I saw him,” Jain stated.
According to Jain, the student—who spoke in Haryanvi—claimed he was mentally sound and that U.S. authorities were misrepresenting him as mentally unwell.
“These students arrive in the U.S. on valid visas in the morning, but by evening, they are sent back—restrained and treated like criminals—simply because they struggle to clearly communicate their purpose to immigration officers. This is not an isolated case. I’m aware of three to four such incidents happening daily. It’s becoming a disturbing pattern,” Jain warned.
Jain’s post has sparked widespread concern on social media and prompted urgent calls for intervention from Indian authorities. As of now, there has been no official response from U.S. immigration authorities or the Indian Embassy regarding the incident.
