The tragic crash of Air India flight AI 171, which was flying from Ahmedabad to London with 242 passengers and crew members onboard, has left the entire nation in shock. This unfortunate accident is being termed as one of the worst aviation disasters in the country’s history. As the nation mourns this devastating loss, it brings back memories of several other major air disasters that have occurred in India over the years.

In 2020, a Boeing 737-800 operating under the Vande Bharat Mission skidded off the runway at Kozhikode Airport and fell into a 30-foot gorge. The crash claimed the lives of both pilots and 19 passengers, while over 100 others were injured. In 2010, an Air India Express flight (IX-812) arriving from Dubai overshot the runway at Mangalore Airport and crashed into a valley. Out of the 166 people onboard, 158 tragically lost their lives. In 1998, an Air India Boeing 737-2A8 crashed into a residential area near Patna Airport, resulting in the deaths of 55 passengers and 5 local residents. Back in 1996, a mid-air collision between a Saudi Arabian Airlines flight and a Kazakhstan Airlines flight over Haryana resulted in the deaths of over 340 people, making it one of the deadliest air accidents in Indian aviation history. In 1993, an Indian Airlines plane caught fire during takeoff at Aurangabad after it collided with a truck on the runway, causing 18 fatalities. In 1990, a tragic accident at Bengaluru’s runway 605 took the lives of 146 passengers and 92 crew members.

These heartbreaking incidents serve as painful reminders of the importance of stringent safety standards and continuous efforts to ensure passenger safety in the aviation sector.
