Baghdad, Feb 20 (IANS): Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani has reaffirmed Iraq’s unwavering support for Lebanon, particularly in providing fuel to aid the country during its ongoing challenges.

During a phone call with Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, Al-Sudani discussed strengthening bilateral relations and addressing regional developments. He assured that Iraq would continue fuel supplies to Lebanon, in line with the Iraqi Cabinet’s decision to support Lebanon’s resilience in overcoming economic and infrastructural difficulties.

Expressing his best wishes to his Lebanese counterpart in his new role, Al-Sudani emphasized Iraq’s commitment to standing by the Lebanese people. He reiterated that Iraq’s assistance aligns with government directives aimed at reinforcing Lebanon’s stability during these trying times.

In response, Salam acknowledged Iraq’s support and highlighted his government’s dedication to fostering stronger ties with Iraq across multiple sectors. He also stressed the importance of joint efforts to enhance security and stability in the region.

An official source from Shafaq News Agency revealed that during the Iraqi Cabinet’s session on November 26, 2024, chaired by Al-Sudani, discussions took place regarding the organized dispatch of fuel to Lebanon. The Cabinet confirmed that all necessary approvals would be secured to ensure smooth coordination between both nations.

Since the escalation of hostilities in Lebanon and Gaza, Iraq has promptly initiated relief campaigns at both governmental and private levels, supplying essential aid, including food, fuel, and humanitarian assistance. Furthermore, the Iraqi government has voluntarily deducted 1% from state employees’ salaries to support Gaza and Lebanon, where ongoing Israeli attacks have resulted in more than 3,500 deaths in Lebanon and over 44,000 in Gaza, with a majority of casualties being women and children.

Even before the conflict intensified, Iraq had already dispatched nearly 100 fuel tankers to Lebanon, mitigating the country’s severe fuel shortage. Lebanon has faced major electricity supply disruptions, with an 80% reduction in power due to the central bank’s inability to issue dollars for oil imports.

Iraq’s sustained commitment to Lebanon underscores its regional solidarity, ensuring that essential resources reach those in need while reinforcing diplomatic ties between the two nations.
