Is Prabhas Charging 150 Crores For Magnum Opus ‘Kalki’?

The upcoming science fiction film ‘Kalki 2898 AD’ is poised to make history as the most expensive Indian film ever produced. Directed by Nag Ashwin and produced by Ashwini Dutt and his daughters Priya and Swapna under the Vyjayanthi Movies banner, the film boasts a staggering budget exceeding ₹600 crore (US$72 million).

The initial production estimates for ‘Kalki 2898 AD’ hovered around ₹500 crore. However, as filming progressed, the ambitious vision for the film necessitated an increase in expenditure. Trailers released for the film offer glimpses of the grand visuals and special effects that likely contributed to the rising budget.

Reports suggest that approximately ₹450 crore was dedicated solely to the production of the film. The remaining budget presumably covers remuneration for the star-studded cast. Prabhas, known for his role in the “Baahubali” franchise, reportedly received ₹150 crore for his lead role in ‘Kalki 2898 AD.’ This figure is considered justified given Prabhas’ immense popularity and the dedication he invested in the project. Legendary actors Amitabh Bachchan and Kamal Haasan, along with Deepika Padukone, are also reported to have received a remuneration of ₹20 crore each. The remaining cast members are also said to have been compensated handsomely.

The financial stakes surrounding ‘Kalki 2898 AD’ are substantial. Theatrical rights for the film have already been sold for an impressive ₹600 crore across India. Anticipation is high for the film’s performance on OTT platforms and satellite channels, with estimates suggesting pre-release business exceeding ₹1000 crore (US$120 million).

‘Kalki 2898 AD’ is positioned as a pan-Indian cinematic event. With its record-breaking budget, A-list cast, and grand visuals, the film has garnered significant attention. Audiences across the country eagerly await the release of ‘Kalki 2898 AD’ on June 27th, 2024, to witness the culmination of this ambitious and expensive project.
