Time appears to be slowly tilting in favour of the YSR Congress Party. Nearly two years after losing power, the opposition is yet to mount a full-scale political offensive against the NDA coalition government. Ironically, it is the ruling alliance itself that is providing YSRCP with strong ammunition through policy failures, frequent flip-flops and a series of controversial decisions.
The coalition government increasingly looks defensive, leaning heavily on publicity campaigns and catchy slogans rather than delivering effective governance. Several promises remain unfulfilled, key welfare schemes are missing, and administrative missteps continue to pile up. If channelled strategically, these shortcomings could turn into political “brahmastras” for the opposition.
The real question, however, is whether YSRCP is prepared to capitalize on this opportunity. Party president YS Jagan Mohan Reddy has only recently begun stepping up political activity by holding regular meetings with party cadre. While this has been welcomed by supporters, many believe the momentum is still lacking and the attack remains unfocused. Political observers caution that the party needs to move quickly before public dissatisfaction begins to fade.
A range of contentious issues are already on the table, including the government’s failed attempt to shift medical colleges to the PPP model, confusion surrounding land policies, unkept welfare assurances, controversial land transactions in Visakhapatnam, rising public debt and concerns over governance. Despite having ample ammunition, the opposition is yet to launch a decisive strike, leaving many to wonder whether YSRCP can turn the tide before it is too late.
