Rekha Gupta Becomes Delhi CM, Parvesh Verma Deputy CM
The BJP has finally realized its long-standing ambition of capturing Delhi in the recent Assembly elections. After 27 years, the party secured a decisive victory, winning 44 out of 70 seats and returning to power in the national capital.
While the electoral process was straightforward, the party faced a challenge in finalizing its chief ministerial candidate. After much deliberation, the BJP has named Rekha Gupta as the next Chief Minister of Delhi. Her appointment comes as a surprise, given that she is a first-time MLA. Rekha comes from a humble background—her father was a bank employee at State Bank of India—and she began her political journey as a student leader before becoming a municipal councillor. Her rise from an ordinary citizen to the top political position in Delhi is being seen as a remarkable achievement.
On the other hand, Parvesh Verma—who made headlines for defeating Arvind Kejriwal in the New Delhi Assembly constituency—was widely expected to be chosen as the CM. His historic victory over the AAP leader put him in the spotlight, and many believed he would be rewarded with the top post. However, the BJP high command surprised everyone by appointing Rekha Gupta as CM and naming Parvesh Verma as Deputy CM.
Parvesh Verma hails from a strong political lineage as the son of Sahib Singh Verma, a former Delhi Chief Minister. With his political experience and family background, he seemed like the natural choice for the position. However, the BJP leadership had other plans, opting for Rekha Gupta and placing Parvesh in the Deputy CM role instead.
With the official announcement now made, the swearing-in ceremony for Delhi’s new leadership is set to take place today. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu has also arrived in Delhi to attend the event. During his visit, he is expected to meet key Union leaders and discuss important matters related to Andhra Pradesh’s future prospects.
