Former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister and YSR Congress President YS Jagan Mohan Reddy has returned to the state and addressed party leaders and supporters from the Guntur region today. His speech touched on various aspects, including his shortcomings during his first tenure as CM and his plans moving forward.
Interestingly, Jagan admitted that he was unable to stand by his party cadres during his time in power. However, he attributed this to external challenges, particularly Covid-19 and its aftereffects, which, to many, seemed like an unconvincing explanation. The 2024 election results sent a clear message—voters rejected vindictive politics, which played a crucial role in the downfall of YSRCP, reducing the party to just 11 seats.
Despite this, Jagan appears to be treading the same path, issuing fresh warnings to Chandrababu Naidu and TDP supporters, vowing to take action if he regains power. While he seems to have acknowledged that his neglect of party workers and excessive focus on revenge politics were key reasons for his defeat, there is no clear game plan on how he intends to course-correct.
On one hand, he is trying to reassure his party cadres, promising to stand by them in his “Jagan 2.0” tenure, but on the other, he is resorting to threats and aggressive rhetoric against political rivals. His decision to arrest Chandrababu Naidu ahead of the 2024 elections backfired badly, significantly contributing to YSRCP’s defeat. However, it appears that Jagan has not fully grasped the impact of this move.
While addressing the gathering, Jagan stated, “We had to deal with the Covid situation for a couple of years, and its aftereffects lasted another couple of years. This is why I couldn’t stand by my party cadres. But in Jagan 2.0, I assure my cadres that I will be by their side.”
However, citing Covid as the reason for alienating party workers has not gone down well with many, as it seems disconnected from the party’s actual failures. Whether Jagan truly learns from his mistakes or continues with the same political approach remains to be seen.
