Did Jagan Conquer Godavari Districts?

YSR Congress party president Y S Jaganmohan Reddy completed his lengthy tour in West and East Godavari districts and entered Visakhapatnam. He will be extensively touring the north-coastal districts here on and wind up his Praja Sankalpa Yatra at Srikakulam borders. Now, political analysts have started digging deep into the pros and cons of his tour in the two Godavari districts, which are extremely crucial for the victory of any political party in the forthcoming elections.

Both the districts put together have 34 assembly seats and any party which can conquer them can come to power. Now, the question is whether Jagan succeeded in his efforts. While the overall response from the people had been encouraging for him, analysts say the YSRC chief could not bring about confidence among the leaders. In several constituencies, he could not identify suitable candidates and the gaps still remain even after the completion of tour.

Secondly, his statement on Kapu reservations did not go down well among the party leaders, let alone the Kapu community. The euphoria built up by the Kapu leaders of the party during the padayatra was dampened by Jagan’s statement. Though they made Jagan to retract his statement later, the damage was already done.“Godavari districts are peculiar in terms of politics. Here, there are not many major issues concerning the people, though there are minor local issues like pollution, roads etc.

The kind of poverty and unemployment that are major issues in other states, are no big issues here. That is why money and caste play a major role in the elections. After working so hard all these days, we have to struggle a lot again to build up the tempo for Jagan all over again,” a party leader observed.Thirdly, the Pawan Kalyan factor has also turned out to be a headache for Jagan. The local YSRC leaders, who were trying to bring about an understanding between YSRC and Jana Sena, were disgusted with Jagan’s comments against Pawan, that too, dragging his family.

Yet, in spite of all these drawbacks, YSRC is expected to fare considerably well in the two districts. Especially in East Godavari, it will give the TDP a run for its money, say analysts.
