Jagan May Pave Way for Third Generation of YSR Family in Politics

The YSR family, one of Andhra Pradesh’s most influential political dynasties, appears set to witness its third generation step into public life.

Even as Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee president Y. S. Sharmila prepares the stage for her son Y. S. Raja Reddy to make his political debut, speculation is growing that her brother, YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) chief and former chief minister Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, may soon introduce one of his daughters into active politics.

At present, Jagan and his wife Bharathi Reddy are in London, where both their daughters have been pursuing higher education and largely keeping away from political attention.

The elder daughter, Harsha Reddy, who recently earned her MBA in France, is now based in London. The younger daughter, Varsha Reddy, graduated from Notre Dame University in the United States and currently works for a reputed firm in Singapore.

However, recent discussions within the YSRCP suggest growing sentiment in favor of bringing a younger face from the family into politics. According to senior party members, the leadership vacuum following the YSRCP’s 2024 assembly election setback has intensified calls for generational renewal and a symbolic revival of the party’s emotional connect with the late Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy’s legacy.

“There is an increasing realization that the party needs a fresh leadership appeal and emotional connect to energize its base, particularly among youth and loyal YSR supporters,” said a senior party insider.

Sources indicate that Jagan may be considering introducing one of his daughters into public life as part of a broader revival and rebranding strategy ahead of the 2029 general elections. This move, if finalized, would mark a major turning point in the family’s political journey—continuing a lineage that has shaped Andhra Pradesh politics for decades.

Meanwhile, Bharathi Reddy continues to remain apolitical, restricting her participation to limited election events while focusing on family business operations and charitable activities.

Insiders also reveal that during his current London visit, Jagan might be weighing the timing and political strategy behind this move, possibly aiming for his daughter’s debut from the family’s traditional stronghold in Kadapa during the next Lok Sabha elections.

If realized, this would cement the YSR family’s presence in Andhra Pradesh’s political landscape for another generation—an evolution that combines legacy, leadership, and emotional symbolism.

Despite the mounting speculation, party leaders remain cautious, declining to confirm whether either of Jagan’s daughters has expressed interest in political life. For now, the YSR family remains silent, leaving Andhra’s political circles abuzz with anticipation.
