Former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy is currently embroiled in an unexpected legal battle—not with the ruling government, but with his own mother, Y.S. Vijayamma. The National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) is hearing a case regarding the share transfer issue related to Saraswati Power and Industries, which has caused a significant rift within the family.
On Wednesday, both sides presented their arguments before the tribunal. Vijayamma’s lawyer, Vivek Reddy, delivered a passionate and emotional plea, which caught the attention of everyone in the courtroom. In his argument, he questioned Jagan’s earlier statement about his fading affection for his sister, Y.S. Sharmila. Reddy emotionally asked, “Even if love for a sister has reduced, what wrong did the mother do?” This poignant remark seemed to strike a chord with the tribunal and others present.
The controversy began when Jagan gifted shares in Saraswati Power to his mother and sister, Sharmila. However, after Sharmila joined the Congress party and opposed Jagan, he filed a petition seeking to cancel the gift deed, alleging that the shares were transferred improperly.
Vijayamma’s legal team contends that the gift deed is legally binding and that there is no basis to cancel it, especially since the physical documents related to the shares had already been transferred. On the other hand, Jagan’s lawyer argued that the share transfer process was not fully completed and questioned how the shares could be passed to Sharmila when the legal process was still pending.
Interestingly, YCP MP Niranjan Reddy appeared in court on Jagan’s behalf, and the proceedings saw both sides presenting detailed and complex arguments. The tribunal listened attentively and raised several clarifying questions.
While the final verdict is expected on May 30, many observers believe that Vijayamma’s lawyer made a stronger case. His emotional appeal and logical points could potentially influence the tribunal’s decision in her favor, which could deliver a significant blow to Jagan, especially considering their close family relationship.
