Jagan, Sharmila React on Women’s Reservation Bill Debate in Parliament

Former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister and YSR Congress Party president Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy has said that parties which opposed the bill to amend the Women’s Reservation Act in Parliament should introspect on what they have achieved. After the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, 2026 failed to secure a two-thirds majority in the Lok Sabha, he took to ‘X’ to question the stand of the opposing parties.

He expressed concern that if delimitation is carried out based on the 2026 census, the South could be further disadvantaged. He noted that while opposition led to the postponement of the Women’s Reservation Bill, it has resulted in a situation where neither the South nor women have received justice. He warned that with the upcoming census, the South could be further penalised for successfully implementing population control measures.

Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee president Y. S. Sharmila Reddy, in her response, stated that the BJP’s strategy in the name of women’s reservation had failed. She alleged that attempts to push controversial legislative changes under the guise of women’s empowerment had not succeeded, and claimed that the Opposition, led by the INDIA alliance, had stood firm in defending democratic values.

She further clarified that what was actually defeated was not the Women’s Reservation Bill, but the “ill-conceived” delimitation-related proposal. According to her, the Opposition never opposed women’s reservation itself. She said the original Women’s Reservation Bill had already been passed in 2023, and demanded its immediate implementation across all 543 Lok Sabha seats, insisting that 33% reservation for women should be enforced without delay.
