Former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan has faced widespread criticism for his handling of the state’s capital issue. Over the past five years, he consistently stalled the Amaravati project and failed to successfully implement his controversial “three capitals” plan. This indecisiveness left Andhra Pradesh without a functional capital from 2019 to 2024, a factor that contributed to his party’s significant defeat in the recent elections, where it managed to secure only 11 seats.
Despite this setback, Jagan’s recent remarks suggest he remains firm in his approach. He stated, “There is no need to develop Amaravati over a vast area or spend huge funds and take loans for it. Instead, Chandrababu can allocate around 500 acres between Vijayawada and Guntur to build Amaravati, which would be sufficient.”
This suggestion that the capital can be established on just 500 acres has surprised many, especially considering Jagan’s five-year tenure as Chief Minister. Critics argue that such a limited vision and lack of commitment have contributed to the decline of his political influence, as reflected in the election results. Supporters of the opposition claim this attitude highlights the shortcomings of his leadership on crucial state matters.
