Former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister and YSR Congress Party president YS Jagan Mohan Reddy’s remarks regarding an accident case involving the son of former minister Seediri Appalaraju have sparked a major political controversy.
A few days ago, Jagan defended the accused, stating that the youngster was only 18 years old and questioned whether a murder case should be registered in an accident case. He said that accidents can happen and argued that the intention of the accused should also be considered.
His comments received strong criticism from various sections, with opponents questioning his stand and alleging that his remarks ignored the suffering of the victim’s family.
The controversy intensified after reports emerged that the accused’s family allegedly attempted to shift the blame onto a driver. Following media reports, police personnel accused of helping in the matter were suspended, and a case was reportedly registered against Appalaraju as well.
Meanwhile, a television channel highlighted the condition of the accident victim’s family, bringing attention to the struggles faced by the deceased man’s wife and their young child. Reports stated that the victim was the family’s only earning member, and his loss had left them facing severe financial difficulties.
The Janasena Party responded by releasing a video combining Jagan’s comments with visuals of the victim’s family. The party used the popular dialogue from Allu Arjun and Trivikram Srinivas’ film ‘S/O Sathyamurthy’ — “An accident is not just a bike or car falling on the road; it is a family falling onto the road” — to highlight the impact of the tragedy on the victim’s dependents.
The issue has since become a political talking point, with rival parties accusing Jagan of showing sympathy towards the accused while allegedly ignoring the victim’s family.
The YSR Congress Party had earlier extended financial support to the family of Gaade Sai Krishna, a rowdy-sheeter whose death in police custody had become a political issue. Critics are now questioning why similar support was not extended to the family affected by this accident.
The controversy continues to fuel debate over political responses to sensitive issues involving victims, accused individuals, and public accountability.
