Jagan’s Assembly Boycott Sparks Disqualification Row

The absence of YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) president Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy and his MLAs from the Andhra Pradesh state assembly continues to dominate political discussions. Citing the denial of the Leader of Opposition status, the YSRCP has chosen to boycott the proceedings, but the move is drawing increasing criticism.

Some YSRCP legislators, concerned about losing credibility in their constituencies, reportedly urged Jagan during a recent meeting to allow them to attend the sessions. Jagan is said to have responded that they could go under the leadership of senior leader Peddireddy Ramachandra Reddy. However, Peddireddy declined to take charge, leaving the impasse unresolved.

Meanwhile, the ruling Telugu Desam Party (TDP)-led coalition has intensified its attacks, warning of possible disqualification for MLAs skipping assembly sessions. Deputy Speaker K. Raghu Ramakrishna Raju dismissed Jagan’s argument that there is no rule mandating disqualification for 60 days of absence. He countered:
“Jagan has been MP, opposition leader, and chief minister. He knows the rules. The law is publicly available.”

Raju further pointed out that the YSRCP MLAs were allotted two questions per Question Hour but none attended. “If they spoke with decency, they would have been given more time,” he remarked.

State Home Minister Vangalapudi Anitha accused Jagan of silencing his own legislators by keeping them away from the assembly. She recalled how, during the TDP’s stint in opposition, Chandrababu Naidu would stage walkouts, but the rest of the MLAs stayed back and fought in the House.

Senior TDP leader Yanamala Ramakrishnudu added weight to the debate, citing constitutional provisions under Articles 188 and 190(4), which state that any MLA absent for 60 consecutive days is liable for disqualification. He even argued that Jagan’s boycott soon after taking oath itself could fall under this clause.

However, analysts believe Speaker Ch. Ayyanna Patrudu may not take the extreme step of disqualification, as it could backfire and give Jagan unwarranted publicity. Instead, they expect the ruling coalition to keep the pressure alive, repeatedly highlighting that YSRCP legislators are failing in their duty to represent their constituencies inside the House.
