Veteran lyricist and screenwriter Javed Akhtar recently reflected on his remarkable 61-year journey in Mumbai, sharing an emotional note of gratitude. He recalled how he first arrived in the city on October 4, 1964, as a 19-year-old with only 27 naya paisa in his pocket and no place to stay. Those early days were filled with struggles, hunger, and sleepless nights, often spent on verandahs, corridors, or even under trees alongside other homeless dreamers.
Despite such hardships, Javed Akhtar said life eventually rewarded his persistence, and the city that once tested him later embraced him. He expressed heartfelt thanks to Mumbai, Maharashtra, and India for giving him recognition, love, and a platform to share his words with millions.
His turning point came in 1969, when he got his first break in films. From there, Akhtar went on to become a legendary voice in Indian cinema, known for his poetic lyrics and meaningful storytelling that have shaped generations.
Born in Gwalior in 1945, Akhtar’s personal life, too, saw many chapters. He married Honey Irani in 1972 and had two children, Farhan and Zoya Akhtar, both successful filmmakers today. After his divorce in 1984, he later married actress Shabana Azmi the same year.
Reflecting on his journey, Akhtar said that the pain and poverty of his youth taught him resilience, gratitude, and compassion, lessons that continue to define both his life and his art.
His story stands as a testament to how determination and talent can transform even the hardest beginnings into a life of legacy.
