The assets of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa have once again drawn attention, sparking widespread interest. A towering figure in Tamil Nadu politics, Jayalalithaa built an immense fortune over her lifetime, stemming from both her film career and political journey. As the political heir of MG Ramachandran (MGR), she played a crucial role in countering the DMK and left an indelible mark on both state and national politics.
Beyond her political legacy, Jayalalithaa was also known for her vast personal wealth. Before her passing, reports estimated her fortune at ₹913 crore, as disclosed by the Tamil Nadu government. With no direct heirs, her estate was placed under the protection of the Karnataka Special Court. Though Deepa and Deepak, her relatives, attempted to claim inheritance rights, their claims were dismissed by the court.
In a recent ruling, the Karnataka Special Court ordered the transfer of Jayalalithaa’s assets to the Tamil Nadu government, given her lack of legal heirs. Experts estimate that the value of her estate, initially assessed at ₹913 crore, has now skyrocketed to over ₹4,000 crore, largely due to the appreciation of land holdings.
A significant portion of Jayalalithaa’s wealth was in real estate, with 1,562 acres of land under her ownership. Additionally, her assets included 27 kg of gold, 10,000 sarees, 750 pairs of luxury shoes, and a collection of imported watches.
Following the completion of legal formalities, the Tamil Nadu government is now set to inherit one of the largest estates left behind by a political leader in India.
