The Bengal Files Set For West Bengal Release On May 15 After BJP Victory

Filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri has confirmed that his controversial film The Bengal Files will finally hit theatres in West Bengal on May 15, following the recent victory of the Bharatiya Janata Party in the 2026 Assembly elections.
The announcement comes several months after the film reportedly struggled to secure theatrical screenings in the state during its nationwide release in 2025. Agnihotri, who is known for directing politically charged films like The Kashmir Files, had earlier alleged that theatre owners in Bengal faced pressure not to screen the movie.
He also claimed that multiple FIRs and political opposition under the previous government led by Mamata Banerjee created hurdles for the film’s release in the state.
Following the BJP’s historic win, Agnihotri took to social media to announce the release date and thanked supporters who had been demanding the film’s screening in Bengal.
The film, which explores events related to Direct Action Day and the Noakhali riots, has emerged as one of Agnihotri’s most debated projects. While critics have questioned the film’s political narrative, supporters argue that it brings attention to important historical events that deserve wider discussion and public viewing.
