Ranveer Singh–Kantara Gesture Sparks Controversy

December 16, 2025

star Ranveer Singh is no stranger to controversies. Since the early days of his career, even incidents without any intention to offend have occasionally landed him in trouble.

During the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) held in Goa last month, Ranveer Singh showered praise on Rishab Shetty for his powerful performance in Kantara: Chapter 1. However, while expressing his admiration on stage, Ranveer went a step further by imitating Goddess Chamundi. This gesture did not sit well with a section of Kannadigas and Hindu audiences.

Interestingly, Rishab Shetty had reportedly hinted to Ranveer beforehand to avoid such gestures before he came on stage. Despite this, Ranveer proceeded. Though the act was intended as a form of appreciation, devotional sentiments are deeply sensitive, and such portrayals can easily hurt religious emotions. The situation worsened when Ranveer, in the heat of the moment, allegedly referred to Goddess Chamundi as a “female ghost,” which triggered widespread outrage on social media.

Following the backlash, Ranveer Singh issued an apology via Instagram, clarifying that he never intended to disrespect any culture or belief and expressing regret if his actions hurt anyone’s sentiments.

Now, Rishab Shetty has finally responded to the incident, without directly naming Ranveer Singh. Speaking at a Behindwoods event in Chennai recently, Rishab stated that imitating divine elements on stage, in reels, or on social media is inappropriate. He openly mentioned that such acts make him feel “uncomfortable.” Rishab also revealed that he and the Kantara team have repeatedly requested people not to casually recreate or imitate divine references.

The episode once again underlines how even unintentional gestures can spark controversy. It serves as a reminder for actors and public figures to exercise greater sensitivity while dealing with matters of faith, culture, and devotion—especially on public platforms.
