The Hindi film industry has been struggling to regain its lost glory for quite some time. Apart from a handful of hits like Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan and Jawan, Ranbir Kapoor’s Animal, Shraddha Kapoor’s Stree 2, and Vicky Kaushal’s Chhaava, most big-budget films featuring A-list stars have failed miserably at the box office.
This ongoing slump has prompted many industry insiders and trade analysts to urge Bollywood to introspect and reinvent itself, especially in light of the growing dominance of South Indian cinema in the pan-India market. Acclaimed director Anurag Kashyap has long been vocal about the flaws in Bollywood’s ecosystem — and now, his ex-wife and noted actress Kalki Koechlin has joined the chorus of criticism.
In a recent podcast, Kalki candidly described Bollywood as being in a state of “recession.” She emphasized the urgent need for creative revival, pointing out that the industry’s inability to produce fresh and engaging narratives is a key reason behind its downfall.
Kalki noted that many within the industry are confused about what content works and what doesn’t, leading to inconsistent decision-making. According to her, production houses are frequently firing and rehiring creative minds in a frantic search for the elusive success formula. This atmosphere of uncertainty, she said, has paralyzed both established filmmakers and aspiring actors, with many projects either being delayed or scrapped altogether.
She also criticized producers for prioritizing star power over storytelling, often investing huge sums in actors while neglecting the script and overall content quality — a gamble that increasingly results in box office failures.
Kalki’s candid take reflects the growing sentiment that Bollywood must break free from its creative stagnation and realign its focus on strong storytelling if it hopes to reclaim its place in Indian cinema.
