Thug Life has proven to be a major setback for Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam, who reunited after 38 years. The director recently apologised to audiences for not meeting their expectations. “For those who hoped to see another Nayakan, all I can say is sorry. It was never our intention to revisit the past. Why would we? Our aim was to do something entirely different. More than excessive expectations, it was a different kind of expectation altogether. Audiences anticipated something far removed from what we ultimately delivered,” Mani Ratnam explained.
While Mani Ratnam is already preparing his next project, Kamal Haasan has decided to take an extended break from cinema. A source close to the actor shared, “The failure of Thug Life has been a big blow for Kamal Haasan. He genuinely believed they were creating something extraordinary. The instant rejection at the box office was shocking for both of them. Kamal Haasan doesn’t intend to sign any new films for the foreseeable future.”
When asked if Kamal Haasan would now shift his focus to politics, the source clarified, “That’s unlikely. Right now, Kamal is stepping away from public life as a whole. His next move is still uncertain.”
