Kantara stands as one of the biggest blockbusters in Indian cinema, grossing over ₹300 crore at the box office. Directed by and starring Rishab Shetty, the film earned critical and commercial acclaim. Following its massive success, Rishab announced a prequel titled Kantara: Chapter 1, which is slated for release on October 2, 2025.
However, the journey of Kantara: Chapter 1 has been far from smooth, facing a series of unfortunate setbacks. The latest tragedy involves the death of a junior artist. As per reports, MF Kapil, an aspiring actor from Kerala, tragically drowned in the Souparnika River in Kollur on Tuesday. Police stated that Kapil went for a swim during the lunch break of the shoot and was swept away by a strong current. Despite immediate rescue efforts by the police and fire department, Kapil could not be saved.
This incident adds to a growing list of challenges the production has faced. Previously, the shoot was halted due to backlash over alleged environmental damage, sparking tensions with local tribal communities. In another incident last year, a bus transporting junior artists met with an accident, injuring several people and forcing a temporary halt in filming. Additionally, a significant financial setback occurred when a costly set was destroyed by unexpected heavy winds and rain.
Despite these obstacles, the team behind Kantara: Chapter 1 remains determined. It remains to be seen whether the film can overcome these challenges and make it to the big screen as scheduled.
