Kantara Chapter 1, the prequel to the 2022 hit Kantara, hit theatres on Thursday. Ahead of its release, the film generated relatively low buzz due to limited promotions and modest advance bookings.
However, strong word of mouth quickly boosted its box office performance. On BookMyShow, advance bookings had reached around 8 lakh tickets prior to release. On Thursday alone, the film sold 1.28 million tickets, nearly 13 lakh, surprising industry observers.
Since August 2023, when BookMyShow began publicly sharing ticket sales data, only four films have crossed the one-million mark on their release day. Pushpa 2: The Rule leads with 1.75 million tickets sold, followed by Kantara Chapter 1 at 1.28 million, Shah Rukh Khan’s Jawan at 1.14 million, and Prabhas’ Kalki 2898 AD at 1.12 million. Early trends on Friday indicate that the film may cross another million tickets on its second day, with roughly 70,000 tickets being sold every hour.
The film stars Rishab Shetty, Rukmini Vasanth, Jayaram, and Gulshan Devaiah. Directed by Rishab Shetty and produced by Vijay Kiragandur under Hombale Films, Kantara Chapter 1 has become a major talking point for its strong opening.
