Kantara Makes Sandalwood a Double 100-Crore Hit in Telugu

Over the years, Tamil films and actors like Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, Karthi, Suriya, and Vijay enjoyed massive popularity among Telugu audiences. However, times have changed, and today, not just Tamil but films from other regional industries are being well-received in Telugu states — provided the content is strong.

The Kannada film industry (Sandalwood) has now achieved a remarkable milestone in Tollywood. It has become the only regional film industry to have two 100-crore grossers in Telugu, while other industries, including Tamil and Hindi, have not managed even one. After the blockbuster KGF Chapter 2, Kantara Chapter 1 is set to become the second Kannada film to cross the 100-crore mark in Telugu, with collections expected to hit the milestone this week.

This is a significant achievement for Sandalwood, as it managed to conquer a massive market like the Telugu states twice, purely based on content rather than star power. Both films gained initial traction from the success of their previous installments and went on to become huge blockbusters thanks to their engaging storytelling.

In contrast, many Bollywood and Tamil pan-India films, despite having massive star casts, failed to join the 100-crore club in Telugu. They managed decent openings but faltered due to weaker content, proving that audiences value strong storytelling over star power.

While this milestone cements Sandalwood’s growing influence in Telugu cinema, Kantara’s collections are expected to dip this weekend due to new Diwali releases.
