Whenever a major Bollywood film hits the screens, discussions around ‘Corporate Bookings’ often make headlines. Despite widespread debate about this controversial practice, no prominent film industry insider has publicly addressed it—until now.
Renowned filmmaker Karan Johar has openly spoken out, acknowledging that many producers engage in corporate bookings and criticizing them for tarnishing the industry’s image by artificially inflating ticket sales. Critics have long argued that such practices create a false buzz, but the trend persists, with recent films experiencing temporary boosts through these tactics.
During a candid conversation on a podcast, Karan Johar stated that corporate bookings have minimal impact on audiences or a film’s reputation. He also highlighted the emergence of a new trend called ‘Self-Booking,’ where filmmakers purchase tickets themselves to jumpstart initial box office numbers. While these strategies may temporarily inflate collections, Karan emphasized that they do not contribute to a film’s lasting appeal or legacy.
“Ultimately, audiences judge the film’s quality,” he remarked. “No amount of corporate or self-booking can fool viewers or determine the long-term success of a movie.”
