Popular Bollywood filmmaker and producer Karan Johar has been ruling the OTT space recently, earning widespread recognition not only as a hitmaker but also as one of the most influential figures in Hindi cinema. However, no matter how powerful or popular he may be, it’s surprising to hear how he’s discussed in private circles—especially Bollywood WhatsApp groups.
Known for his sharp wit and comic timing, Karan is loved for his candidness and ability to deliver punchy, humorous lines. During a recent live session, a curious fan asked him an interesting question: “Since you’re part of several Bollywood WhatsApp groups, have you ever thought of making a film or writing a book based on the conversations that happen there?”
Karan’s reaction was both amusing and honest. With a smile, he responded, “If my friends and I ever got a place in those WhatsApp groups, we’d have to pack up and move to London—we couldn’t stay in Mumbai anymore!” He humorously hinted that the things discussed in those groups are far too bold or controversial to survive socially in the city.
He added, “To be honest, we are instant commentators in our own groups. We become fashion critics, film critics—basically critics of everything. Everyone has an opinion, but that doesn’t mean it can always be said openly, even in a private group.”
Currently, Karan Johar is hosting the popular reality show The Traitors on Amazon Prime Video. Meanwhile, his production house Dharma Productions is gearing up to release Sarzameen, an intense thriller set in Kashmir. Directed by Kayoze Irani, the film stars Kajol, Prithviraj Sukumaran, and Ibrahim Ali Khan. Sarzameen is scheduled to premiere on July 25 on JioCinema.
