Karan Johar Moves Delhi HC to Protect Personality Rights

Following in the footsteps of Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan, filmmaker Karan Johar has approached the Delhi High Court seeking protection of his personality rights. His plea was heard on Monday, with senior advocate Rajshekhar Rao representing him.

Karan alleged that his name and photographs were being misused across websites and social media platforms, sometimes even for fundraising purposes. He contended that such actions infringed on his rights and harmed his public image.

During the proceedings, Meta Platforms argued that not all online posts or comments could be considered defamatory. Advocate Varun Pathak cautioned that imposing a blanket ban on jokes, memes, or comments could set a dangerous precedent, potentially opening the door to a flood of similar cases.

Justice Manmeet Pritam Singh Arora highlighted the distinction between harmless memes, disparaging content, and unauthorized commercial use of someone’s identity. He emphasized that the court cannot restrict all fan pages or comments without clear evidence of misuse.

Rao, however, insisted that Karan has the right to control the use of his persona, noting that viral memes often generate revenue and that no one should exploit his identity without consent. The case is scheduled to be heard again on Monday at 4 pm.
