If the reports circulating in some sections of the media are to be believed, Telangana Jagruthi president Kalvakuntla Kavitha, daughter of BRS president and former Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao, is planning to drop her “Kalvakuntla” surname. Sources suggest she will adopt her husband Anil Kumar’s surname, becoming Devanapalli Kavithamma going forward.
While it is customary in Indian tradition for women to take their husband’s surname after marriage, Kavitha has carried the “Kalvakuntla” prefix all these years, clearly to stake a claim on her father’s political legacy. However, following her exit from the BRS and estrangement from her family over the last three to four months, she has faced criticism for continuing to use the surname. Critics argue that by retaining it, she might be signaling a possible return to the party.
To counter such perceptions, Kavitha’s decision to embrace her husband’s surname is being seen as a political rebranding, a symbolic step towards carving out an independent identity beyond her father’s shadow. Adding weight to this interpretation is her choice to launch her new padayatra, “Janam Baata”, not from her parental home but from her husband’s village.
Observers have also noticed a transformation in her public image. Her attire—white sarees, large bindis, and a serious demeanor—has drawn comparisons to Jayalalithaa, with social media dubbing her “Jayalalithaa 2.0 – Telangana Edition.” Political analysts suggest that Kavitha is consciously crafting a distinct political persona, no longer positioning herself merely as KCR’s daughter but as a leader in her own right.
Her growing support among women’s groups and rural communities is seen as a valuable asset that could fuel a fresh political trajectory. The re-emergence of “Kavithamma” may mark a new twist in Telangana politics, with speculation rife about whether this transformation will lead to the formation of a new political outfit, a repositioning within the BRS, or a broader independent journey.
