Kavitha vs KTR: Echoes of Sharmila-Jagan Rift

Share

In a striking political development, Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) MLC and Telangana Jagruthi founder-president Kalvakuntla Kavitha has indirectly raised a banner of revolt against her brother and BRS working president K.T. Rama Rao (KTR). This internal discord has prompted comparisons with Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Y.S. Sharmila, who famously parted ways with her brother and YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) president Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy.

Sharmila’s fallout with Jagan dates back nearly four years, rooted primarily in a property dispute and her aspiration for a prominent role in the party. Having managed party affairs during Jagan’s imprisonment and played a crucial role in the 2014 and 2019 elections, Sharmila believed she deserved an official position within YSRCP. However, Jagan, wary of creating another power centre, refused to accommodate her politically.

This rejection led Sharmila to launch her own political outfit in Telangana. However, facing limited public support, she eventually joined the Congress in Andhra Pradesh and actively campaigned against her brother during the 2024 elections — a move that effectively severed their personal and political ties.

Now, Kavitha appears to be on a similar trajectory. Though there is no known property dispute with KTR, sources suggest she feels sidelined despite her significant contribution to the Telangana statehood movement and successive elections. Kavitha reportedly believes she deserves a more influential role in the party, possibly even staking claim to succeed her father, K. Chandrashekar Rao, as the next chief minister.

However, much like Jagan in the YSRCP, KTR is said to be consolidating his authority within the BRS, leaving little room for parallel leadership. As he prepares to take over the reins of both the party and potentially the state, Kavitha finds herself increasingly marginalized.

Despite this, Kavitha has not backed down. In a bold and controversial move, she recently gave a candid interview to TV5 CEO Murthy — a media house known for its critical stance against the BRS. Her choice of platform raised eyebrows but also signaled her readiness to assert her political aspirations publicly. Notably, Sharmila’s first public dissent also came through a high-profile interview — with ABN-Andhra Jyothy MD Vemuri Radhakrishna — which laid bare the fissures within the YSR family.

While Sharmila eventually formed her own party and later merged it with the Congress, Kavitha has maintained that she has no intention of leaving the BRS or launching a separate political outfit. However, questions remain over her next steps — especially if tensions within the party escalate or she faces disciplinary action.

As the situation unfolds, the political future of Kavitha — and her relationship with her brother — will be closely watched. Her path bears an uncanny resemblance to Sharmila’s, but whether it leads to a similar outcome or forges a new political narrative remains to be seen.
