At a time when Telangana CM KCR is on a hyperactive mode trying to cobble up an anti-Modi front at the Centre, there is utter silence in two other regional parties – the YSRCP and the TDP – in the Telugu states.
Why are these two regional parties lukewarm to the anti-Modi front? Why are the leaders of the to-be-born third front not calling up YS Jagan and Chandrababu Naidu the way they are calling KCR?
Chandrababu had played a key role at the national level. He was the steward of both the NDA and the UPA. He made PMs at the Centre. But, all that is past now. His last go at the national politics was a disaster. He did not mind advising and helping the Congress Party.
But, he lost power in AP in 2019 and has been suffering blow after blow in the local elections. As a result, he is fighting for his own survival. A defeat in 2024 could very well mean the end of the road for the TDP.
Jagan is in power with an absolutely unassailable majority. But he too is extremely cagey when it comes to dealing with the Centre.
He has openly backed the BJP government and has helped it several times by casting his lot with the BJP in the Rajya Sabha. It is because of this that the regional parties have stopped communicating with him.
Even KCR may not be able to influence both the parties as both the TDP and the YSRCP wants to be friendly with Modi. Jagan wants Centre’s support for running his show while Chandrababu is desperately seeking an alliance with the BJP for 2024.
So, each regional party has its own priorities and naturally both the TDP and the YSRCP are not inclined to be influenced by KCR.
