Kochi: A meeting of the Kerala cabinet on Thursday has decided to declare four districts in the state as red zones, where a high rate of coronavirus infection has been reported. The changes will be made subject to the Union government’s approval.
The four northern districts Kasargod, Kannur, Malappuram and Kozhikode will be declared as red zones.Though the Union government has included seven districts from Kerala in the list of 170 hotspots across the country, the cabinet has observed that only four districts have to be included in the red zone.
Three districts Ernakulam, Pathanamthitta and Thiruvananthapuram, which were earlier included in the list but has witnessed a decline in infection rate over time, will be omitted from the list.
Kottayam and Wayanad will be declared as green zones where restrictions will be eased fully if the Centre permits the categorization while all other eight districts will be included in the orange zone.
The cabinet meeting has also decided to give relaxation of lockdown to traditional industries such as coir, handloom, cashew and beedi after April 20.
It has also been decided to strictly comply with the guidelines issued by the Union government regarding the restrictions till May 3.
