2022 is ending in the new few years and we are about to welcome 2023 in style. Prior to entering the new year, let us look at how 2022 turned out for the film industry. As we know, there are a lot of huge hits at the box office and some unparalleled disasters making it a mixed bag. If we make a list of highest-grossing films in India in 2022, it is ‘KGF – Chapter 2’ which stands at the top.
According to North Indian portals, this Kannada action drama collected 980 crores in India. It stood on the top and it was followed by Rajamouli’s magnum opus which earned a gross of 901 crores. After these two huge pan-Indian movies, the third spot is occupied by ‘Avatar 2’ which got 374 crores in just 15 days. There are reports that it may earn up to 500 crores by the end of its run in India. Another Kannada film ‘Kantara’ secured the fourth spot with 361 crores. The fifth place is occupied by ‘Ponniyin Selvan – 1’ which earned around 327 crores.
The first Bollywood movie in this list arrives now and it is ‘Brahmastra’ which got 310 crores but it was a cost failure considering its massive budget. Kamal Hassan’s ‘Vikram’ stands in the seventh spot with 307 crores while hard-hitting drama ‘The Kashmir Files’ got 281 crores. Coming to ‘Drishyam 2’, it was a huge surprise for everyone. The remake movie earned 277 crores after 43 days and it will end up getting nearly 300 crores. The tenth position is taken by young Bollywood hero Karthik Aryan’s ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2’ which got 218 crores.
The next five movies in this list are Vijay’s ‘Beast’, Hollywood film ‘Doctor Strange in Multiverse of Madness’, Alia Bhatt’s ‘Gangubai Khatiawadi’, Mahesh’s ‘Sarkaru Vaari Paata’ and ‘Bheemla Nayak’ respectively. Out of all the fifteen, only five movies belong to Bollywood and eight films are from South India. This shows how the tide has changed in India.
