Amidst this growing skepticism, Shankar has announced an ambitious new historical project titled Velpari, inspired by a legendary Tamil chieftain. The film’s announcement appears to echo the strategic pivot made by director Mani Ratnam, whose Ponniyin Selvan tapped into Tamil heritage and delivered a major box office success. However, Ratnam’s subsequent film Thug Life did not meet expectations—highlighting that cultural themes alone are not a surefire formula for success.
