Kiran Abbavaram Sparks Debate on Screen Sharing Between Telugu and Tamil Films

The long-standing debate over screen-sharing between straight Telugu films and dubbed releases has once again taken centre stage — this time, sparked by Tollywood actor Kiran Abbavaram’s comments about his upcoming film K-Ramp. The actor recently expressed disappointment that his film is struggling to secure a decent number of screens in Tamil Nadu, while Tamil actor Pradeep Ranganathan’s dubbed film Dude, which is also releasing this Diwali, is getting a stronger theatre presence in the Telugu states.

In a candid interview, Kiran lamented that Telugu actors do not receive the same affection from Tamil audiences as Tamil stars enjoy in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. He also voiced concern that despite making content-rich films, young Telugu heroes are finding it difficult to establish a solid market in neighbouring states, unlike their Tamil counterparts who have already built a loyal following in Tollywood.

Responding to this controversy, Mythri Movie Makers producer Ravi Shankar addressed the issue during the Dude trailer launch event in Hyderabad. When asked about the perception that Telugu actors struggle to get theatres outside their home turf, he clarified that Tamil Nadu has fewer screens compared to the Telugu states, and theatre allocation there often depends on word of mouth after release day.

Without directly referencing anyone, Ravi Shankar dismissed the notion that Tamil Nadu exhibitors deliberately avoid Telugu films. He urged filmmakers not to blame the system but to focus on delivering strong, compelling content that naturally earns wider screen space.
