KTR and South Leaders Oppose Population-Based Delimitation

The Government of India is pushing for the delimitation of constituencies based on population figures, sparking widespread criticism, particularly from Southern states. Many leaders argue that redrawing constituencies solely on population count is unfair to states that have successfully implemented family planning policies. Now, BRS working president K.T. Rama Rao (KTR) has added his voice to the opposition against the Centre’s move.

Supporting Tamil Nadu CM M.K. Stalin’s stance, KTR stressed that Southern states should not be penalized for adhering to family planning measures when the nation needed them the most. He stated that executing delimitation without recognizing the efforts of these states goes against the principles of democracy and federalism. KTR proposed that if delimitation is necessary, it should be based on fiscal contributions to the nation instead. He highlighted that while Telangana constitutes only 2.8% of India’s population, it contributes over 5.2% to the country’s GDP.

KTR also pointed out that Southern states accounted for 26.2% of India’s population in 1951, but their share had declined to 19.8% by 2022, showcasing their commitment to population control. Echoing similar concerns, CM Stalin emphasized that delimitation is not just a matter for Tamil Nadu but for all of South India. He argued that the process should not punish states that have successfully controlled population growth, led in development, and made significant contributions to national progress. Stalin called for a fair, transparent, and equitable approach that upholds the values of federalism.

With increasing resistance from South Indian leaders, the debate over delimitation continues to gain momentum. Many believe that a more balanced approach should be adopted, considering economic contributions alongside population metrics.
