Kunal Kamra Hits Back at Controversy, Calls Crackdown a ‘Silencing Machine’

Comedian Kunal Kamra has found himself at the center of a heated political controversy following the release of his latest video, “Naya Bharat,” on YouTube. The video, which has garnered over 11 million views, has sparked massive outrage, particularly among Shiv Sena supporters, who accused him of making a derogatory remark about Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. The backlash escalated when Shiv Sainiks vandalized the venue where Kamra shot his show, leading to a series of legal troubles for the comedian. He now faces three FIRs in Mumbai and is currently in Tamil Nadu.

In response to the controversy, Kamra took to social media to express his frustration over the attempts to silence him. Posting on X, he shared a five-point message titled “How to Kill an Artist: A Step-by-Step Guide.” He claimed that the systematic targeting of artists begins with outrage, intensifying until brands withdraw their support, venues refuse to host their events, and authorities take legal action against them. He concluded that an artist in such situations is left with only two choices: to conform and compromise or to suffer in silence.

Reports emerged that the audience members who attended Kamra’s show were being called in for police questioning, adding to the growing concerns about artistic freedom. However, a police official dismissed these claims as false. Meanwhile, Kamra refused to appear before the Khar police in connection with the FIRs against him. When a police team visited his Mahim residence to serve a notice, he mocked the effort, pointing out that he hadn’t lived there for a decade and calling it a waste of time and public resources.

Kamra has long been known for his sharp critiques of the establishment and has remained defiant despite multiple legal and political challenges. While authorities insist that legal action is being taken per procedure, his supporters argue that the incident is yet another example of how dissenting voices are being stifled. As the controversy continues, the case has ignited discussions on freedom of expression and the increasing intolerance toward satire and political humor in the country.
