Lakshmi Manchu on Tollywood’s Gender Bias

Lakshmi Manchu has once again raised her voice against gender bias in Tollywood. While promoting her upcoming film Daksha: A Deadly Conspiracy, the actress hinted at how a superstar’s ex-wife has been sidelined after divorce — a remark that immediately sparked speculation about Samantha Ruth Prabhu.

Speaking to the media, Lakshmi pointed out the disparity women face in the industry. “There is a superstar’s ex-wife who works here. After her divorce, even the projects once offered to her were taken back. People say, ‘Oddu le amma, he might feel bad,’ and that’s the excuse. She is waiting for good work, and I don’t have to name her,” she said.

Her statement reflects a harsh reality: while male stars usually continue unaffected after personal setbacks, women often face subtle restrictions that dent their careers.

When asked directly if she was referring to Samantha, Lakshmi gave a balanced yet telling reply. “You’re assuming it’s Samantha. But remember, at least five or six superstars have been divorced, and I am close to all of them. My point is that a man’s life rarely changes after divorce. But for women, especially those with kids, in-laws, and responsibilities, freedom doesn’t come easily — she has to fight for it,” Lakshmi explained.

Her comments struck a chord, shining a light on the struggles women endure in cinema, while also highlighting the resilience and determination of actresses like Samantha, who continue to push forward despite challenges.
