Lakshmi Manchu Speaks Out Against Blanket Ban on Pakistani Artists

As tensions between India and Pakistan continue to rise, fresh calls to ban Pakistani artists from Indian cinema have sparked heated debates across the film industry. Many, including actress Lakshmi Manchu, are voicing their opposition to such blanket prohibitions and advocating for a more thoughtful, empathetic approach.

The controversy resurfaced after singer-actor Diljit Dosanjh faced backlash for co-starring with Pakistani actress Hania Aamir in Sardaar Ji 3, while earlier this year, Vaani Kapoor was criticized for teaming up with Fawad Khan on Abir Gulaal, a project that was put on hold after the Pahalgam terrorist attack.

Speaking up on the issue, Lakshmi Manchu strongly condemned blanket bans targeting artists solely based on their nationality. “Don’t politicize art,” she said. “Go after those who cause trouble, not artists. You can’t impose a sweeping restriction and stop everyone — where is our sense of progress, our warmth? Indians have always embraced people with open hearts.”

She also questioned the reasoning behind such extreme measures: “Where are our hearts now? Why resort to herd mentality? What threat is an actor to our nation? Why such insecurity?” Lakshmi urged for a more unified, constructive way forward. “Rather than using a divide-and-rule policy, let’s look for common ground and fight together against our real enemies,” she concluded.

Her remarks have sparked a wider conversation on cultural exchange, freedom of expression, and the role of art during times of political tension.
