The Covid second wave impact on India is not as harsh as it was during the peaks. The fresh infections and fatalities caused by respiratory disease are coming down gradually and the recovery rate is also increasing. While the cases are coming down, new variants of contagious disease are being detected in the country. This is a signal of the danger bell that the Covid virus is not over yet and we should be more cautious.

Dr. Vinod Kumar Paul, physician-scientist and NITI Aayog member said the same at a press conference. He said, we haven’t overcome the Covid fear yet, and urged everyone to be careful.Talking about the Lambda variant of the Covid, the NITI Aayog member said, the variant which is spreading in Peru rapidly is a variant of interest. However, he said, there is no threat to the country with the new variant.

Saying that the government is monitoring the Covid situation in the country, DR. VK Paul said, only two states, Maharashtra and Kerala account for a major share of the cases. The NITI Aayog member stressed the need of taking preventive measures that have to be taken in the states and union territories that saw a rise in the fresh Coronavirus cases.

The global health agency World Health Organization (WHO) has termed the Lambda variant of the virus as the variant of interest and said the variant carries more mutations that trigger the spike protein. The WHO data says the variant of interest was found in Peru in the month of August last year. Since then, the virus has spread to other nations and several nations reported the variant.
