Lebanese caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati has urged the United States to ensure Israel’s full withdrawal from occupied southern Lebanese territories by February 18, in line with the ceasefire agreement brokered by Washington and Paris. During his meeting with US Deputy Special Envoy for the Middle East, Morgan Ortagus, in Beirut, Mikati emphasized the need for an end to the systematic destruction of towns and villages and the complete implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701. This includes resolving border disputes along the Blue Line, a critical issue for regional stability, particularly in southern Lebanon. Mikati stressed that adherence to international resolutions is vital for peace and stability in the region.

In a parallel development, Ortagus also met with Prime Minister-Designate Nawaf Salam, who echoed the call for increased US pressure on Israel to ensure its timely withdrawal from the occupied territories by the February 18 deadline. Salam underscored the importance of cooperation with the United States and the international community to support Lebanon’s recovery, reconstruction, and long-term stability.

Ortagus reiterated the United States’ commitment to supporting the incoming Lebanese government, highlighting Washington’s backing of Salam’s reform agenda, which includes key initiatives for financial, judicial, and administrative restructuring. She expressed hope that the new government would be formed promptly, paving the way for further progress in Lebanon’s stabilization and recovery efforts.
