Genelia Deshmukh on Her Comeback and Life with Riteish
Genelia Deshmukh is all set to make her much-awaited comeback to South cinema with the bilingual film Junior. In a recent interaction with Deccan Chronicle, she shared her excitement about returning to the industry and reflected on the journey that still keeps her connected to her fans. She expressed that the role in Junior was a strong and meaningful one, something she always looks for in her projects. For her, it’s never about screen time, but the impact a character leaves. The story of Junior felt unique and refreshing, making it an easy choice for her comeback.
When asked about her fondest Telugu film, Genelia fondly recalled Bommarillu, calling it the most beautiful and memorable experience of her career. She feels honored that audiences still remember her as Hasini, even after so many years, and says she would be thrilled if a sequel ever happens. She also mentioned that although she hasn’t been actively following many films in the past decade, she and Riteish particularly loved the Telugu film Majili, which led them to remake it in Hindi.
On the prospect of working with her husband Riteish again, Genelia said that she would love to, but only if the project is meaningful for both of them. She emphasized that their decision to work together would never be just for the sake of it, but rather for a story where they can both contribute creatively. Talking about their relationship, Genelia downplayed the “couple goals” label, saying that their strength comes from growing together every day. While disagreements are natural, the key, she says, is understanding, mutual respect, and a conscious choice to remain deeply connected despite life’s changes.
Genelia also spoke about her experience in Sitaare Zameen Par, describing it as a heartfelt film that carries an important message about inclusion. She expressed pride in being part of such meaningful cinema. She went on to share her upcoming projects — after Junior, she will be seen in a horror comedy directed by Ram Gopal Varma, an action-thriller love story with Emraan Hashmi, and a Marathi film titled Raja Shivaji, produced by her and directed by Riteish. She plays a small role in this project, but it holds special significance for both of them, especially as Riteish takes up the director’s mantle once again after Ved. These projects, she says, are close to her heart and mark a fulfilling new chapter in her career.
