Malayalam cinema is riding a wave of unprecedented success in recent years. Films like 2018, Manjummel Boys, and Thudarum proved that compelling Malayalam stories could resonate widely and deliver impressive box-office numbers. Each new release seemed determined to outdo the last, setting fresh records along the way.

The latest blockbuster, Lokah: Chapter One – Chandra, has now set a new benchmark. Directed by Dominic Arun and produced by Dulquer Salmaan, the film has grossed over ₹300 crore worldwide in just six weeks. Made on a modest budget of around ₹30 crore, Lokah has surpassed Mohanlal’s Empuraan to become the highest-grossing Malayalam film ever and the first to cross the ₹300 crore milestone.

For perspective, Pulimurugan became the first Malayalam film to reach ₹100 crore in 2016, while Manjummel Boys hit ₹200 crore in 2024. Now, Lokah has set the bar at ₹300 crore. Interestingly, these films also performed remarkably well in the Telugu states, further boosting the pan-Indian appeal of Malayalam cinema.

Lokah features Kalyani Priyadarshan in the lead role, alongside Naslen and Chandu Salimkumar in pivotal roles. The film is the first installment of a planned five-part franchise and introduces Malayalam cinema’s first female superhero, signaling a bold new direction for the industry.
