However, his recent releases haven’t delivered the expected results. Films like Karnan (referred here as “Kar”) failed to impress audiences, largely due to weak content. Directed by Vignesh Raja, the film couldn’t generate the desired impact. Similarly, Idli Kadai also ended up with a lukewarm response.

Interestingly, both these films were helmed by Kollywood directors, which has now sparked discussion. Dhanush has long been known for choosing unique and content-driven scripts, but many feel that this sharpness in selection has been missing lately. A lack of freshness in storytelling and repackaging of familiar plots seem to be affecting audience engagement. In several cases, films appear to be built around his star image rather than strong narratives, which is impacting their overall reception.

On the other hand, Dhanush has found better success when collaborating with Telugu and Hindi filmmakers, where the storytelling and presentation often feel fresher and more engaging.

This doesn’t mean working with Kollywood directors is the issue, but it does highlight the need for more careful script selection. As a star, choosing stories that balance his image with strong content is crucial. Otherwise, repeated setbacks could slow down his momentum.

Notably, the films directed by Dhanush himself have received a positive response, indicating his strong understanding of storytelling. Applying that same judgment to projects with other directors could make a significant difference.

In the end, Dhanush’s current phase appears to be a minor dip primarily caused by script choices. If he shifts focus back to content-driven cinema, there’s little doubt he can bounce back strongly. Fans, too, are hoping to see him return to top form soon.
