As campaigning for the Jubilee Hills assembly by-election reaches a fever pitch, an intriguing story from the days of united Andhra Pradesh is resurfacing on social media.
According to reports, the late Maganti Gopinath, former BRS MLA from Jubilee Hills whose untimely demise prompted the current by-election, once considered making a film about the infamous political backstabbing of TDP founder and former CM N. T. Rama Rao by the present TDP president N. Chandrababu Naidu in 1995.
Following the coup that dethroned NTR and elevated Chandrababu Naidu to power, Hyderabad’s Himayatnagar — home to the offices of Naidu’s TDP and NTR-TDP led by Nandamuri Lakshmi Parvathi — became a hub of intense political activity. During this period, Daggubati Venkateswara Rao, NTR’s elder son-in-law and initially part of Naidu’s coup, left Naidu’s camp to join Lakshmi Parvathi’s faction. Maganti Gopinath reportedly aligned with the same camp.
Frequent political discussions in NTR’s TDP office often revolved around the dramatic “backstab” that altered the party’s trajectory. During one such conversation, a journalist suggested that Venkateswara Rao, with his prior acting experience, could make a political film about the episode. Enthused by the idea, he discussed it with Maganti Gopinath. The next day, Andhra Bhoomi carried a report about the planned film, sparking widespread discussion across the state and political circles.
However, despite initial excitement, the project never materialized. Political sensitivities within the TDP, coupled with pressure from senior leaders and party sympathizers, likely stalled the film. Political observers believe that, had it been made, it could have become a defining historical account of the TDP’s internal coup.
“The film that might have unveiled the true story of the 1995 political coup was never made — perhaps silenced by political prudence and party loyalty,” the social media story notes.
