Deepika Padukone on India’s Oscar Snubs
Deepika Padukone has always been known for speaking her mind fearlessly. As the first Bollywood star to openly discuss depression in the public sphere, she has never shied away from expressing her views on important topics. Recently, at a fashion event, she shared her thoughts on India’s repeated snubs at the Oscars.
While getting ready for the event, Deepika reflected on how many deserving Indian films and talents have been overlooked by the Academy.
“India has been robbed of the Oscars many times. So many deserving movies and talented artists have been snubbed. But I remember sitting in the audience when they announced RRR, and I got emotional. Outside of being an Indian, I had nothing to do with that movie, but it was a huge moment that felt very personal,” she shared.
RRR won the Oscar for Best Original Song with Naatu Naatu in 2023, marking a historic moment for Indian cinema. Deepika, who introduced the song on the Academy stage that year, emphasized its cultural significance in her speech.
Her sentiments echo the thoughts of many in the Indian film industry, who believe that several outstanding films continue to be overlooked on the international stage.
