Mahesh Babu–Rajamouli’s Varanasi Launches With New IMAX Technology

Superstar Mahesh Babu and visionary filmmaker S.S. Rajamouli have officially begun work on their much-anticipated Telugu film Varanasi, with a grand launch ceremony held in Hyderabad. The event marked not just the start of a major cinematic collaboration but also the introduction of a groundbreaking technological advancement for Indian cinema.

Speaking at the launch, Rajamouli revealed that Varanasi will be the first Telugu film to implement the newly developed Premium Large-Scale Format for IMAX. Unlike traditional productions that are shot in standard cinema-scope format and later converted to IMAX, this film is being captured natively in full-screen IMAX format.

“We are introducing a new technology to Telugu cinema — ‘Premium Large-Scale Format IMAX’,” Rajamouli said. “Films like Baahubali and RRR were produced in IMAX, but Varanasi will be entirely in full-screen format from the start.”

Mahesh Babu acknowledged the pioneering legacy of his father, Superstar Krishna, who was known for bringing innovative technologies to Telugu cinema. He added that Varanasi continues that legacy by embracing an advanced filming system designed to elevate the visual experience for audiences worldwide.

The film is being jointly produced by Durga Arts and Showing Business, with a planned global release in Summer 2027. With its cutting-edge format and the powerhouse collaboration of Mahesh Babu and Rajamouli, Varanasi is expected to set new benchmarks in large-scale filmmaking.
